Your guide to a mite-free autumn: ensure a happy and healthy horse.
A strong immune system is half the battle. The more resilient your horse, the less chance mites have to cause problems. Therefore, it is wise to pay extra attention to your horse's health during the mite season. Ensure sufficient vitamins and minerals in its diet – you can do this by temporarily increasing the amount of balancer or mineral pellets. You can also opt for extra liquid minerals from, for example, the Bering Sea, which are easily absorbed by the body. And did you know that nettle tincture can be a real boost for the immune system? This natural supplement not only has a strengthening effect but also purifies the blood. A mild detox and an immune boost in one!

2. Start early with an internal supplement against mites
If your horse is sensitive to mites, it is wise to start with a natural supplement early in the season. Don't wait until your horse starts itching or develops spots, but take action before the mites begin to multiply. Start slowly with a maintenance dose, so that the first mites attempting to attack immediately receive 'indigestible' blood and cannot reproduce further. This breaks the cycle and helps you keep the infestation under control before it really gets out of hand.
3. Shave the legs and take good care of them
Yes, it can be tricky to shave your horse's beautiful socks, but it can really make a difference in the fight against mites. Thick socks are the perfect hiding place for these little creatures, where they can breed and multiply. By shaving the legs, you make it much less attractive for them. Moreover, any wounds are noticed more quickly and can be treated more easily. Additionally, it's a good idea to regularly soak the legs in a soothing solution of tea tree oil and lavender. This not only helps to calm and soften the skin but also acts as a deterrent against mites. A nice treat for your horse and a smart preventive measure!
4. Keep Treating Consistently
Mites are persistent intruders, and unfortunately, their eggs are not easily destroyed. This means that re-infestation can occur quickly. Therefore, it is important not to stop after a few weeks, but to continue treating consistently throughout the entire mite season. Keep supporting your horse's immunity, provide dry and clean resting areas, regularly give a supplement, and continue soaking the legs. By maintaining this routine, you keep the problem under control and ensure a more comfortable mite-free season for your horse.
