Get ready for the mite season in horses!

September is the ideal month to give your horse a detox. The waste products that your horse has built up during the summer need to be eliminated. A clean body is less attractive to mites! Choose a detox that lasts no longer than a week, as a detox is quite intense and requires a lot of energy. A detox is not without risks, so never apply it to horses with extreme obesity or, for example, to horses that are prone to laminitis. Do you think a detox is too intense for your horse? Liquid nettle is a mild cleansing option and can be seen as an alternative to a detox. Are you unsure if a detox is safe for your horse? Contact a therapist or us.

Start with an herbal supplement against mites

If you start treating against mites in time, you can begin with a maintenance dose of an herbal supplement. It is not necessary to start with a high dose since there is no mite infestation yet. And the sooner you start, the easier it is to keep mites manageable. Choose a supplement that makes the blood and skin flakes of the horse indigestible for mites. This way, mites can no longer reproduce, causing the population to decrease.

Clip the socks and soak the legs

For many horse owners, this is always a tricky point: clipping the socks. But it is extremely important in the treatment of mites in horses. By clipping the socks, you can detect wounds more quickly, and treatment becomes easier. The legs also become less attractive as air gets to them. Is your horse familiar with mites? Then we always recommend clipping the socks. And not just when the mite problem arises, but preventively to keep the mite outbreak manageable. Soaking the legs in a herbal mixture based on miracle oil also helps against mites. This nourishes the skin and makes it more resilient. It is an extra step to take in the treatment of mites. Soak the legs, for example, every 6 weeks preventively.

Start on time and avoid a lot of trouble!

The first blow is worth a dollar, an old saying but truly applicable when it comes to mites in horses. The sooner you treat preventively, the easier it is and the better you can manage your mites. This prevents you from having to resort to chemical treatments, which you would rather avoid as it takes a huge toll on the overall resistance of the horse.

What is the difference between chemical and natural treatment against mites in horses?

Chemical pesticides kill the adult mites that come into contact with the pesticide. This is an important detail. Mites burrow into the skin, making them not all accessible to chemical pesticides from the outside. Additionally, the fur can sometimes get in the way. Chemical treatment is a quick solution that does not break the cycle of mites. This works differently than natural supplements. Natural supplements do not kill the mites but prevent them from laying new eggs. In this way, the mite popu...
