The Behavior of Fleas on Dogs
Fleas only approach the dog to drink blood. Sometimes they lay eggs in the fur, but usually they do this in the dog's environment. For example, in the dog bed, the carpet, or other fabrics. Eggs determine for themselves when to hatch. When the eggs hatch, they first become a small larva. After 4 weeks, the larva transforms into a flea. They have the unique ability to sense vibrations when the dog is nearby to drink blood. For example, it often happens that after a vacation, the eggs hatch en masse at the first vibrations. A larva can survive for 1.5 years without feeding on blood.
Should I continue treating my dog in the winter?
Has your dog had fleas in the past two years? There is a good chance that there are still eggs in their environment that can hatch, even in winter. And since fleas are usually only noticed when the problem has already become too large, we advise continuing preventive flea treatment in winter as well. Don't forget the environment
In the dog's environment, eggs can survive for a very long time. Therefore, regularly clean your dog's surroundings thoroughly. Examples of places where fleas lay their eggs: Dog bed, Cushions, Carpet / rug, The couch, Car, Dog toys, Curtains. It is best to vacuum regularly and wash materials that can go in the washing machine at the highest possible temperature.
