Why is my horse stamping? Possible causes and solutions.

When a horse lifts its leg with a powerful movement and stamps it on the ground, it usually means that it is experiencing irritation. A single stamp due to a fly is normal, but if the stamping occurs regularly, it may indicate an underlying problem that needs attention. Stamping is not intended as a communication behavior between horses, but as an expression of discomfort. Research on Tinkers shows that consistent stamping often points to one of the causes listed below.

Mites

Cause 1: Mites

Mites are by far the most common cause of structural stamping, especially in the colder months. These parasites thrive in warm, humid places, such as the groin and socks of horses with feathers. They burrow small tunnels in the skin, lay eggs there, and cause a lot of itching and irritation. Treating mites can be challenging, as it often requires a comprehensive approach, such as adjusting the feed, using herbs against mites, and treating all horses in the herd to prevent spread.

Cause 2: Mud Fever and Rain Scald

Mud fever (below the hock) and rain scald (above the hock) are skin infections that often arise from bacteria. The spots that develop can cause intense itching, leading the horse to stamp or bite at the affected areas. This problem often results from a combination of factors, such as a deficiency in vitamins and minerals, damp conditions, and the late detection of the wounds. Treatment must be carried out both externally and internally to properly support the horse.

Cause 3: Flies

In the summer, flies can cause a lot of irritation in horses, which can lead to stamping. Unlike mites, this occurs in every breed. The stamping is often less forceful, but can still be bothersome for the horse. Additional measures, such as setting up fly traps, removing manure daily, and getting rid of fly eggs, can help reduce the fly nuisance.

Cause 4: Pain

Stomping can also be a sign of pain. Horses can become grumpy and restless due to pain, which can lead to repeated stomping. This is often accompanied by other behaviors, such as scraping, laying ears back, yawning, or cribbing. Cribbing releases endorphins, a substance that works both as a relaxant and pain reliever, helping horses temporarily alleviate pain.

Cause 5: Sand in the socks

In horses with socks, sand during wet periods can cause discomfort. The sand gets into the socks and causes itching once it dries. This problem is relatively easy to solve by rinsing the legs and removing the sand from the socks.

Cause 6: Overfed sober horse

Sober horse breeds are often fed richer diets in winter and get less exercise, which can lead to a disturbed metabolism. The body stores excess substances in the legs, which can cause irritation. This also makes the legs more susceptible to mites, scratches, and wounds. For these breeds, it is important to use a mineral balancer that does not contain grains and, where possible, to offer unwrapped hay.

Stamping: What Can You Do?

Stamping more than usual is not part of the natural behavior of horses and may indicate discomfort or a medical issue. If your horse is consistently stamping, it is wise to rule out several possible causes and consult an expert if in doubt. Would you like to know more about addressing stamping behavior in horses? Mite season in horses: what steps should I take?

The better the immunity, the more resilient horses are against mites. It is therefore extremely important to keep your horse's immunity at an optimal level. The poor weather, shedding, etc., all affect immunity. It is therefore crucial to support your horse in this. First, ensure sufficient vitamins and minerals. This can be done by temporarily increasing the balancer/mineral pellets or by providing extra minerals (liquid from the Bering Sea), for example. Additionally, liquid nettle tincture is...

Health

Sweet itch

Why it is important to keep horses' resistance optimal in case of summer eczema.

Itching is caused by inflammatory reactions under the skin. These inflammatory reactions occur because the horse has an allergy to the saliva of midges (Culicoides mosquitoes). The horse's body reacts to this, resulting in small inflammatory reactions throughout the body and at the site of the mosquito bite. These inflammatory reactions cause itching, leading the horse to rub against surfaces, which damages the skin and in turn causes more inflammatory reactions.
