Mite season in horses: what steps should I take?

The better the immunity, the more resilient horses are against mites. It is therefore extremely important to keep your horse's immunity at an optimal level. The poor weather, shedding, etc., all affect immunity. It is therefore crucial to support your horse in this. First, ensure sufficient vitamins and minerals. This can be done by temporarily increasing the balancer/mineral pellets or by providing extra minerals (liquid from the Bering Sea), for example. Additionally, liquid nettle tincture is a huge boost for immunity! Its advantage is that it is also blood-purifying, which provides a mild detox as well.

Start with an internal supplement against mites

Do you know that your horse is sensitive to mites? Then don't wait until your horse starts stamping and developing spots, but start earlier with giving a natural supplement. Often, you can begin with the normal maintenance dosage and there's no need to start with a high dosage. Starting the product early has the advantage that the first mites immediately get the "indigestible" blood and can no longer reproduce. This way, you immediately break the cycle and keep the infestation under control.

Shaving the Legs and Soaking the Legs

This always remains a tricky point for horse owners, especially when the horses have beautiful socks. However, shaving the legs is a very important preventive measure for horses that are sensitive to mites. By shaving the legs, you make them less attractive, as there are fewer warm, humid spots. Additionally, you ensure that wounds are more easily seen and their treatment is simpler. Furthermore, we recommend soaking the legs in a solution of, among other things, neem oil and lavender. This solution supports the skin, has a soothing effect, and repels mites.

Keep treating consistently!

Mites are a persistent problem. You cannot kill mite eggs, which means that re-infestation can happen very easily. Therefore, it is not over after 2 weeks; you will need to continue treating preventively throughout the entire mite season to keep the problem under control. Therefore, continue to support the immune system, ensure dry standing and lying areas, keep adding a supplement against mites preventively, and regularly soak the legs in the solution of miracle tree oil.

Be consistent and keep a close eye on your horse. In this blog, you can read more abo...

What does an internal herbal supplement do for horses with mites?

We notice that many customers think they can get rid of the mite problem in their horse with 1 or at most 2 treatments. Unfortunately, this is never the case; mites are very persistent. With a chemical treatment, you can indeed kill a large part of the mites immediately. A follow-up treatment is always necessary, but even then, you are still not rid of the mites. The eggs of mites are indestructible and do not die from chemical agents. They wait patiently until the conditions are ideal again and...
