Is there a difference in approach between adult bed bugs and the eggs?

We start right with the most difficult stage of bed bugs. The eggs could, so to speak, survive an atomic bomb. The eggs are so well protected and strong that they can still hatch easily after 2 years. Bed bug eggs wait for the right conditions to hatch. Bed bug eggs cannot be reached by chemical and/or natural means, which makes dealing with bed bug eggs extremely difficult. You can only really reach the eggs when they hatch. The only thing that can help is a weed torch; carefully go along all the cracks to burn away the bed bug nests. This will remove some of the eggs, but possibly not all of them.

Larval Stage

For convenience, we refer to this phase as the larval stage, but blood mites go through several phases within this stage. By the larval stage, we mean blood mites that have emerged from the egg but have not yet fed on blood. In the larval stage, blood mites are more vulnerable to external influences. Their exoskeleton is still soft, and their legs are still short. This makes it possible to effectively address this stage using an environmental spray. This environmental spray is based on silicon dioxide and creates a sandpaper-like layer. The blood mites in the larval stage rub against this layer, causing them to dry out and die. Therefore, always spray this spray along the route from the blood mite nest to the perch.

Adult Red Mites

Adult red mites feed on the blood of chickens and can reproduce. It is therefore extremely important to manage this phase of the mites. If red mites do not reproduce, the population will gradually decrease. Adult red mites are almost impossible to tackle through the environment. Mite traps and a container with dust bath sand certainly help, but it is especially important to treat through the chickens. Adult red mites need blood to survive and reproduce. By treating chickens with an herbal supplement (through feed or drinking water), you make the blood indigestible for the mites. As a result, the mites can no longer reproduce. They also become panicked and will start to appear during the day, allowing the chickens to see and eat them.

A red mite infestation? Address all stages!

As you can read, each stage requires a different approach. Therefore, in the case of a red mite infestation, it is extremely important to apply multiple treatments. This way, you can get the red mite outbreak under control the fastest. Treat not only the environment but also the animals! CHICKEN TALK | Guest blog Hans Krudde: Chicken matching

In a previous blog, we read that there are hundreds of chicken breeds, each with unique breed-specific characteristics. The art of matching is to find a chicken breed that combines all our wishes. If we are looking for a very calm (cuddly) chicken that lays at least 320 eggs per year and (therefore) does not go broody, while also having a spectacular appearance, we will be disappointed because that breed does not exist. We will have to compromise and prioritize the characteristics that we find m...

What should you do as a chicken keeper in spring/summer? Tips for healthy chickens.

Higher temperatures lead to more activity among bacteria, parasites, and flies. Therefore, start the season with a thorough cleaning of the chicken coop. Remove everything, clean the coop, and replace the bedding material. Don't forget to take care of the nesting boxes and perches, as they are often favored spots for red mites. Disinfection is not necessary for red mites; plenty of water is the trick against them!
