Summer eczema in horses: how to help your horse through the summer

Summer eczema (also known as tail and mane eczema) is an allergic reaction to the bite of the culicoides midge, also known as a gnat. These small biting mosquitoes are especially active at dusk and around water. The bite causes a severe itching reaction, leading horses to rub intensely, resulting in bald spots, wounds, and sometimes even infections.

5 Tips to Reduce Itching in Horses

Protect with a fly sheet: A good fly sheet provides physical protection against mosquitoes. Choose a lightweight, breathable fabric that covers the entire body (including the belly and neck). Ensure a clean living environment: Regularly remove manure and standing water from the paddock or pasture. Standing water attracts mosquitoes. Bring your horse inside on time: Most midges are active in the early morning and evening twilight. Preferably keep your horse in the stable during these peak times, ideally with a fan to keep mosquitoes away. Support from the inside: A well-functioning immune system helps fend off allergic reactions. Supplements with omega-3 fatty acids, with repellent properties against insects (based on citronellol and citronellal), and for example, liquid nettle. Note: not every horse reacts the same, consult a therapist or veterinarian if in doubt. Regularly care for the skin: Gently wash irritated areas with a mild shampoo and ensure that wounds remain clean. Use soothing lotions or sprays that calm and restore the skin.

Natural protection against mosquitoes: make it yourself or buy it?

Would you prefer not to use chemical insect sprays? Understandable. Fortunately, there are natural alternatives that are safe for sensitive horse skin.

Natural Tip: Citronella Lavender Spray

A nice, homemade spray consists of a combination of natural essential oils such as citronella, lavender, and eucalyptus. These scents are very unattractive to mosquitoes but pleasant for horses. For example, mix: 300 ml (cooled boiled) water 100 ml apple cider vinegar 10 drops of citronella oil 10 drops of lavender oil 5 drops of eucalyptus oil Shake well before use and spray gently on the neck, flanks, and legs (avoid eyes and mucous membranes). Always test on a small patch of skin first to see how your horse reacts.
