Why blood mite trays are effective in the fight against blood mites in chickens
Red mites are actually very clever parasites. By hiding during the day, they protect themselves from the active chickens. And as soon as the chickens go to roost, the red mites become active. The chickens' rest is significantly disturbed when there are red mites in the coop. For this reason, red mite traps are ideal to use, as they ensure that chickens can sit quietly on their perches. How does this work? Read on quickly in this blog!

Bedbugs breathe through their back
On the back of bedbugs are pores, through which the bedbug can breathe. Once these pores become clogged, the bedbug can no longer breathe and will suffocate.
Blood mite traps create an extra obstacle
Since blood mites are active at night, it is difficult to combat them. Blood mite traps are attached between the wall and the perch, creating an additional obstacle for the blood mites. You fill the blood mite traps with oil (preferably lemongrass oil combined with citronellol and citronellal). The oil then becomes the only way for the blood mite to reach the chicken. As the blood mite walks through the oil, its pores will become clogged. This causes the blood mite to suffocate and die. Blood mite traps are therefore an effective tool for tackling adult blood mites.
Keep the red mite trays clean!
Where there are chickens, there is dust, making a chicken coop a very dusty environment. This dust drifts around and lands on the oil in the red mite tray. This creates a layer on the oil that red mites can walk over. As a result, the effectiveness of the red mite trays is lost, which is a shame. Therefore, always clean the red mite trays regularly to keep them dust-free. Unfortunately, most red mite trays are difficult to clean because they are attached to the perch and the coop. Fortunately, there are now detachable red mite trays available, which are only attached to the perch. You can then remove the perch, including the red mite trays, from the coop, making them easy to empty and clean.
Blood mite boxes are part of the method against blood mites. With blood mite boxes, you only tackle the adult blood mites. Therefore, it is important to use multiple methods and products against blood mites. Opt for internal supplements based on herbs, as they make the blood of the chickens indigestible. Also, keep the chicken coop clean and regularly spray it with a special spray based on silicon dioxide. This acts like a kind of sandpaper that young blood mites rub against and dry out. Don't forget to hang a blood mite test under the perch; this is the best way to quickly see if there is a blood mite infestation in the chicken coop!
