Worms in Chickens
A common problem in chickens is worms, which unfortunately is often discovered too late. A worm infection can only be detected through a fecal examination, as the worms cannot be seen with the naked eye in the droppings. A worm infection usually occurs through contact with contaminated droppings from wild birds or from new chickens. The contaminated feces are eaten by, for example, slugs and beetles, which are then consumed by your chickens. This way, a worm infection can easily develop in chickens.
Symptoms of Worms in Chickens
Worms are not seasonal and can occur throughout the year. However, there is often a peak during the summer months, as the eggs and larvae thrive in warmer and more humid conditions. A chicken can have a few worms without issue, as long as the worms do not become overwhelming and cause problems. A veterinarian can easily determine if there is a worm infestation through a fecal examination. Additionally, there are symptoms that can help you recognize worms in chickens, namely:
Chickens become thinner and lose weight
Bloody diarrhea
Pale and/or dry combs
Chickens hunch up
Chickens become less active
Chickens stop laying eggs
Treatment of Worms
The veterinarian may prescribe a deworming agent, but worms can also be addressed naturally. Chickens can also be treated preventively to keep the worm population under control. A liquid supplement based on turmeric, artemisia, thyme, and allium helps to thicken the intestinal wall, preventing worms from settling. Additionally, it supports natural resistance and optimizes gut health. In the case of a worm infestation, this herbal combination can be administered daily through the drinking water as a course. It can also be used preventively by adding it to the drinking water twice a week.
